The NFSA Codes, Standards, and Public Fire Protection department is unmatched in personnel and ability in its services to the fire sprinkler industry with Certified Building Officials, and NICET Certified Technicians currently on staff. The NFSA is internationally known and widely recognized as the preeminent spokesperson on technical issues for the sprinkler industry. The department coordinates the NFSA representation on the committees that write the codes and standards that affect the fire sprinkler industry. The members of the department assist the NFSA members in the application of these codes to specific situations and provide training and education to keep everyone in the industry familiar with the most recent changes to these codes and standards. Members of the department also coordinate research to further the understanding of the design and installation of water-based fire protection systems.

Jeffrey M. Hugo is the Vice President of Codes, Standards, and Public Fire Protection for the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He represents the fire sprinkler industry primarily in the development of building, fire, existing and residential codes through serving on several NFPA technical and ICC committees. Jeff contributes in research, informal interpretations of codes, exam development, training, and regularly contributes building code related articles to publications such as NFSM, Fire Protection Contractor and other industry newsletters. Jeff is editor of the 2009, 2012, and 2015 editions of NFSA’s Fire Sprinkler Guide. Jeff resides in Michigan and he is a Michigan registered Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer since1995. He holds a multitude of certifications by the ICC, including the Certified Building Code Official (CBCO).
John Swanson has worked in the fire protection industry for over 20 years as a firefighter, fire marshal and deputy state fire marshal – inspector/plans examiner with the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division. His background includes developing, enforcing, and interpreting codes and standards at the state and national level. As a deputy state fire marshal, he was actively involved in codes and standards development as a Principal member of the NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code technical committee and as a past member of the IBC Fire Safety Committee and IFC Interpretation Committee. John also enjoys sharing his interest in fire protection through training and education on codes and standards. In 2013, John was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to serve a four-year term on the Minnesota Board of Architecture and Engineering. John lives in Lakeville, Minnesota with his wife, Teresa, and his three boys, David, Ben, and Micah.
