Protecting the Future of Parking
How do we protect mechanically accessed parking? This is the big question. All this technology is for naught if it cannot be protected correctly. Mechanically accessed parking provides a unique and difficult protection problem. It contains all the fire hazards of a normal parking garage in addition to the mechanical systems that are used to park the vehicles. While the threat to occupant life and safety is almost negligible, the ability to appropriately protect property is a challenge.

The International Code Council (ICC) Committee Action Hearings ended on May 4th. The Committee Action Hearings lasted 21 days and took 200 total hours to complete. Around 1,162 proposals were heard and deliberated by 13 different code committees. The NFSA Code Development Team was there for every proposal to ensure the fire sprinkler industry was represented and the fire sprinkler concept was furthered. Long before the Committee Action Hearings started, the NFSA Code Development Team began writing, reviewing, commenting and working with our partners and others in the industry to ensure the next edition of the I-Codes provides the highest level of protection as possible.

The Committee Action Hearings (CAH) of the International Code Council are in full swing. While normally these hearings would be in person, this year they are completely virtual. The ICC has created an impressive online hearing environment that has proved to work well as the various committees hear the many proposals submitted for this code cycle. This cycle includes the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), International Fire Code (IFC), and many more. The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) has been successful in supporting/opposing proposals that affect the fire sprinkler industry.

On March 1st, the monograph for all the proposed changes to the 2024 ICC Group A model codes will be released. As usual, there are several thousand proposals that must be processed through the code development committees over the span of several weeks in April and May. The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) submitted 17 proposals to further the cause of the automatic fire sprinkler industry. This is part three of the proposals that were submitted by the NFSA.
