The fire sprinkler system and fast-acting firefighters prevented a fire from spreading in a downtown condo unit Monday morning. The La Crosse Fire Department was dispatched at 9:18 a.m. for a fire alarm activation at the four-story Gateway Terrace Condominiums. Crews found smoke and fire in one of the units. Battalion Chief Jeff Schott said the fire sprinkler system was working properly and kept the fire from spreading to other units. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. The condo unit had moderate smoke, fire and water damage. No one was injured in the incident.
