Site Visit to the Johnson Controls Facility in Cranston, Rhode Island

On January 28, 2020, I visited with Devin O’Leary, Training Manager, Building Technologies & Solutions and Jay Cannon, Technical Trainer, at the Johnson Controls facility located in Cranston, Rhode Island.

We toured the Educational Center which contains a valve room with every type of valve and sprinkler system variation, including wet, dry, and deluge, a fire sprinkler lab in which spray patterns from a variety of different heads can be demonstrated; a hood system mock-up; and a pump room. There is an enclosed lab in which live burn demonstrations can be performed, a meeting room and amphitheater for presentations and training sessions.

Located in the lobby is an interesting display on the history of Frederick Grinnell and his company featuring the development of early fire sprinklers. Mr. Grinnell’s actual work desk is a highlight of the display.
