Minnesota Fire Service Day at the Capitol

On January 29, fire service professionals from around Minnesota met at the State Capitol to discuss proposed legislation with members of the House and Senate. Prior to meetings with individual lawmakers, firefighters were briefed on key legislative initiatives by leaders of the three fire service organizations that organize the annual event:  the Minnesota Professional Firefighters, the Minnesota State Fire Department Association, and the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association.  87 firefighters registered for the event, and they conducted more than 180 individual meetings with members of the Minnesota legislature. Among the bills being opposed by the firefighters:  a “ban the sprinkler” bill that has been introduced in both the House and Senate (HF 477 and SF 212).  The identical bills prohibit local or state officials from adopting ordinances or code changes that require sprinklers in one- and two-family homes and townhouses.  NFSA staff was on hand to answer questions about the bills and fire sprinklers.
